Happy Birthday

Ms Spadone.

I fondly remember yourself, Andrew and I
watching a flock of black storks flying in after a tough journey
across the Straights of Gibraltar.

They were very high up, quite tired
but we could just make out their silhouette and markings.

After discussions with Allison and Andrew
we thought it would be nice to include
the part we did not get to see.
The black storks settling down and getting fed and watered after their journey.

Hopefully your picture will add to their journey and story.

As always I started the picture with research and sketches.
These sketches are then brought together as the start of the drawings.

Quite loose and free

but it gives me order to what I want to do with the picture.

Once I'm happy with the layout I start to add details, tidy things up
and start to think about contrasts.
The lightest and darkest areas and layering the graphite.

I also like to get a good amount of detail to the eye and head.
Slowly I build up layers of graphite,
at times engraving the paper with harder pencils to help build up layering.

Once most of this has been done I will start to bring the drawing together.
Blending the background, foreground and tidying up more details.

And then we have the finished drawing.

I hope you like it.
It was a challenge and a pleasure to work on.
I also hope it will be a good reminder of a great day´s birding.

Interlude

I am working on a private commission

Feasting on Art
After a little break, from posting

I should mention the

"Feasting on Art Exhibition"

at La Vizcaronda,

which is organised by

DFAS de la Frontera.

The exhibition is for is open to the public from

11:00 to 14:00.

went very well.

we had a good evening. There was a good turn out too and

Thanks to everyone who did come.

There was a lovely atmosphere and everyone seemed to get on well.

Pete Mosca estudió Bellas Artes en universidad en Inglaterra.

Ha expuesto sus trabajos en Inglaterra en galeriás, publicaciones y en televisión.

Pete Mosca studied Fine Art at university in England.

He has exhibited his work throughout the UK in galleries and also in publications and on television.

Though trained in several disciplines within fine art and predominantly concentrating on mixed media paintings in the past, more recent works have focused on two styles of communication brought together by his interest of nature and where he has chosen to live.

Though these two styles may differ, the sentiment and work ethic is always the same.

While preparing for my next pencil darwing

I decided to get some other bits out of the way.

I've been meaning to draw a quick study of a few inverts.

So to start with I chose a

Dysdera croeta

also known as a woodlouse spider.

They are widespread throughout

Europe, though not reported in Scandinavia.

As their common name suggests they mainly eat woodlice,

so can be found in gardens, under logs or stone and in damp places.

Mapping and positioning almost completed,
maybe the odd tweak or branch added to get balance.

Drawing a colourful bird is always a challenge in graphite.

One of the nice things about it is you tend to see
all of the subtleties
the bird and medium have to offer.

The famous red breast of the Robin
is usually all we really get to see of this lovely bird.

Graphite can bring forward all of the details easily missed

such as the handsome head,

cheeky character

not to mention the skinny little legs holding
the familiar plump frame.

EDIT: I'm not happy with the way this drawing is going
so it will go on the shelf for a bit.
I had intended to draw it with colour but still need to sort out if I will use paints, if so do I make them or buy them, or use coloured pencil.

Here is the start of a new drawing.
It is a Geotrupes egeriei or Dung Beetle,
(Eger's Earth Boring Beetle)
It's early days but the composition and
shade levels are starting to come together.

There are many different types of Dung Beetle,
all of which feed partly or exclusively on faeces. Most of these species belong to the subfamilies Scarabaeinae and Aphodiinae of the family Scarabaeidae
